Nizwa Fort & Souk

4.8 (13,200)

Nizwa was once the capital of Oman and remains the soul of its interior — a city of scholars, silversmiths, and warriors. The iconic Nizwa Fort, with its massive 40-meter circular tower, is the most visited historic monument in the country. The adjacent traditional souk is one of the few authentic craft markets in the Gulf still selling locally made silverwork, pottery, and khanjars (traditional Omani daggers) rather than imports.

Highlights

  • Nizwa Fort's 40-meter circular tower — the most visited monument in Oman
  • Friday livestock market — a centuries-old goat and cattle trading tradition
  • Silver souk — the best place in Oman to buy traditional khanjar daggers and jewelry
  • Falaj irrigation channels — UNESCO-listed ancient water system still in use
  • Bahla Fort and Jabrin Castle day trips nearby

How to Get There

1.5-hour drive from Muscat on the expressway. Day trips and overnight stays available.
